READ THESE BOOKS

We Deserve to Heal: Black Women on the Perils and Promises of Friendship With White Women

It's all right there in the subtitle.

Best of Enemies

I thought Best of Enemies was just the Hollywood movie, starring Taraji P Henson, about friendship between Durham’s Ann Atwater (fierce black activist in the 60s) and CP Ellis (head of the local clan.) But this book has fabulous U.S. & NC history.

My First White Friend

Patricia Raybon is the wise guide you want to learn from.

WATCH THESE MOVIES

You People

It does such a FABULOUS job of portraying a white woman in all our ridiculous glory.(But here’s the secret: rather than saying “I’m so glad I’m not like that,” we’re asking, “oooh…how am I LIKE THAT?” That’ll be the win.) (If spicy/naughty language is not for you, skip this one.)

A CHARGE

LOVE BLACK WOMEN

Sometimes love means honoring the spaces where Black women are together, alone. Other times it may mean treating them to lunch--and not expecting them to help you process your own baggage around race. Love these friends gently, like you care for someone who’s grieving.

USE YOUR VOICE

Speak up about the racism you see/hear in the world. Do something that will cost you. That will likely impact the relationships in your family. That makes your low-key racist colleagues feel uncomfortable. Educate your white children, nieces, nephews about their responsibility, and yours, to speak up.
